Whether for business or pleasure, British Airways flyers can now make phone and video calls during their flights. On March 19, the carrier’s first aircraft offering complimentary Starlink Wi-Fi took flight from London to Houston. Thanks to technological advances, the first of a larger rollout, British Airways flyers can chat their way through their flight on a phone or via video call, for free, regardless of whether they splurged on premium seating and perks.
Each passenger will be allowed to connect multiple devices simultaneously. In a press release, the carrier emphasized that Starlink Wi-Fi’s presence on board will improve flyers’ experiences, with “home-like connectivity even at 38,000 feet.” Moreover, cabin and flight crew will benefit from the ability to “communicate seamlessly in real time with colleagues on the ground.”
An offshoot of Elon Musk’s SpaceX, Starlink provides satellite internet to an increasing number of carriers. In addition to British Airways, it also partners with (or has plans to work with) Qatar Airways, Aer Lingus, Air New Zealand, Alaska Airlines, and more.
The new tech is a game-changer for personal calling, entertainment, and work productivity while flying. On outfitted aircraft, you can now take work calls and be present in Zoom meetings while in the air. If there’s an onboard emergency or you’re just in the mood to gab, you can call or FaceTime a loved one. Additionally, gone are the days of downloading entertainment essentials (like music, TV shows, and movies) before your flight.
Starlink Wi-Fi On British Airways Flights
Naturally, in line with air travel etiquette, avoid playing your device out loud. Also, remember to speak at a considerate volume when chatting on the phone. If you forget to bring headphones, be sure to ask for a pair.
“Please do not access anything offensive, or watch or download inappropriate content (please note some sites are blocked),” the airline further notes.
Per the carrier, all British Airways planes will offer complimentary Starlink Wi-Fi across all cabins within the next two years, including short- and long-haul flights. British Airways is prioritizing outfitting its Boeing 787-8 fleet with the new offering.
The airline’s Chairman and Chief Executive, Sean Doyle, described the carrier’s first flight with Starlink as “a landmark moment.”
“We’re excited to be the first UK airline to bring this level of connectivity to our customers,” said Doyle. “We know that staying connected matters to people, whether they’re traveling for work or heading off on holiday, and Starlink will give our customers fast, reliable Wi-Fi that transforms the onboard experience. This milestone is part of a wider investment in elevating every aspect of our customer journey as we continue to modernize our airline.”
